Benefits of 1-Speed vs. 2-Speed in higher power EV applications for vehicle range, performance and cost for D-E segment vehicle.
Project Objective
- Determine cost penalty vs range for 2-speed eAxle.
Outcome and Customer Benefits
- 2-Speed gearboxes having larger flexibility to cover performance requirements (range plus ‘aggressive’ acceleration / top speed requirements) 1.5% - 4.5% range improvement typically seen.
- The cost penalty (vs battery cost / size) of multi-speed applications becomes increasingly justified as application power requirements increase eAxle cost increase c. $200 - $350 (= c.1.5 – 2.5 kWh at current economics, or only 1.5 – 2.5% of battery-based range improvement).
- At very high performance targets and commercial vehicle applications, multi-speed powertrains are proving desirable / essential.
Timeline
- Setting up all 3 in 1 sub-systems and simulation – 5 weeks.
- Analysing, optimisation, short-listing and finalising of eAxle specification – 4 weeks.
